When I’m working in the yard, there are a lot of jobs that require using a shovel.  Throughout the years, I have purchased a few different types of shovels to get the job done.  My wife and I also want to teach our children to work, so some of the shovels we have purchased are shorter than the average one that you would purchase.  When we were installing the sprinkler system, we used all sorts of different tools.  For the sprinkler valve box, we used a square head shovel to dig out a rectangular space to put the box in.  For the sprinkler heads we used round shovels to dig the holes where they would sit.

As I said, many other projects in the yard require using the shovels.  In our front yard we have a flower patch where my wife and daughters like to plant seasonal flowers.  To dig out the old ones or flowers that have died, they use the round shovels.  Once they have the flowers in and they add soil or fertilizer, the shovels work great to spread the dirt and/or fertilizer around.  We also use our shovels to work in the garden when putting plants in and when we clean up after a crazy storm during the rainy season. Since we include our children in all these projects and they had shovels that were their size, they learned how to use shovels in many ways and I know it will help them when they are older and getting jobs.
