One way to update wood floors without pulling out the old is to stain them. This gives the floor a new, updated look for not a lot of cost and gives a beautiful color and tone to your wood floor. Here are a few basic things to know about staining.

You want to choose your stain type oil-based or water-based. If you want to know more about the differences between the two you can read more here.

1. Prepare: You will want to your floors for the stain by sanding them completely. If you do not have a sander you can rent them at most hardware stores.

2. Test: You want to test the stain before staining the whole floor. You can test in an area that may not be seen or on scrap wood of the same type.

3. Apply: Now you are ready to apply the stain. Use a rag or an applicator to apply the stain making sure that it is evenly applied watching for drips and pooling. Then allow it to dry according to the stain’s instructions.

4. Add: It is important to add protective coating to your stain.  The stain only is a color or tone to the wood and does not protect it. Add a layer of polyurethane or another protection.

5. Dry: Make sure you give enough drying time to let the stain and protection coat to dry before adding your furniture or rugs.
